Farmers Arms, Pontarddulais

The interior is divided into a large bar and dining area with wooden beams.  Above the bar a large painted inscription reads ‘There are no strangers here only friends who have yet to meet’.  Popular place to view sports events on the various television screens.

The Farmers dates back to at least 1819 when it is mentioned in the diary of Captain Jenkin Jones of the Royal Navy:  May 15, 1819 ‘At 3h. Went into a little public house at Pontardylais, the sign of the Farmers Arms.......I made a hearty dinner with a Welch Rabbit and two small pints of beer’  The licensee being a lady called Thomas. 

The Farmers Arms is mentioned again during the Rebecca Riots when the toll collector at Bolgoed Gate was chained in a stable which was attached to a public house called ‘Farmers Arms’ in July 1843.

‘The Maid of Cefn Ydfa’ was filmed by William Haggar Junior in the Pontarddulais area in 1913.  The frontage of the Farmers Arms was used in the public house scene.

During the 1960s cockle women of Penclawdd would sell their produce at the inn on Friday evenings.
