Red Lion, Pontarddulais

The oldest public house in Pontarddulais and mentioned by Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg) in his Agricultural Observations of June 1796:  (June 15)’ Pont ar Dulais, nine miles from Swansea, a village with a good Inn, here I enter Carmarthenshire’

During the early 18^th century the inn was a focal point for fishermen who fished the nearby river Loughor and for stagecoaches travelling to nearby Swansea.

A former landlord, Griffith Vaughan, was involved with the Rebecca Rioters on the evening of 6^th September 1843 when he and his comrades attacked the nearby Pontarddulais Gate.  He was eventually acquitted in March 1844. 

A special feature of the Red Lion are the cellars hewn from solid rock on which the inn stands and subsequently keeps the temperature cool consistently.  Has two stoned fireplaces.
