Westgate Hotel, Cardiff

Westgate, CardiffImpressive looking Brains corner pub dating back well over a hundred years.  Pub rebuilt during the 1950s.

Refurbished at the beginning of the millennium. Previously framed newspaper cuttings of elephant popping in for a drink!   High ceilinged with named plaques of public houses going round the bar.

Pool table and dart board.  Designated smoking area at back of pub.

King’s Castle, Cardiff

Kings Castle, CantonAt one time called Ebeneezer Riley’s King’s Castle and built during the late 1880s.  Part of the pub used to be a chapel with back room retaining part of the chapel ceiling.

During the 1990s pub styled on a traditional London pub which has since been discarded.

Popular with football fans.

Canton Hotel, Cardiff

A locals public house dating back to the early 20th century.  Much refurbished over the years.

Known as a traditional working man’s pub at one time licensed to Cardiff City star Ronnie Bird. 

During 1990s famed for its choice of over 40 whiskies!

Admiral Napier, Cardiff

A large and lively traditional pub built in 1886.  Particularly busy on football match days.

As of early 2012 Napier has new exterior including a new pub sign.

The Goscombe, Cardiff

The Goscombe, CantonCanton’s newest pub opened in March 2005.  A former bakery which was converted into a public house at a cost of over £500,000.

Food served all day and toilets located upstairs.  At one time children not allowed but rule since been rescinded.

Comfortable seating close to the bar.  Free car parking nearby.

Canton Cross Vaults, Cardiff

Canton's oldest pub and bullt before 1875.  Originally a coach house.  Name derives from cross-roads used centuries before by Romans travelling along Cowbridge and Llandaff Roads.

From 1860 to 1904 was the Canton Cross Brewery.

The pub was used as a recruitment office  during the First World War.

The Insole, Cardiff

A locals public house built at the start of the 20th century and located just off Cowbridge Road East on Harvey Street.

Pool table a major attraction in the bar area.

The Insole is mentioned in Welsh author Howard Spring’s novel ‘Heaven lies about us’

The Clive Arms, Cardiff

Dating back to Victorian times and located on Cowbridge Road East.  A popular public house attracting a wide range of clientele.  Derives its name from Clive of India who reputedly haunts the premises.

Ty Pwll Coch, Cardiff

A hundred year old pub renamed the Cock in the 1930s.  Tudor style appearance stems from this period.  A working man’s public house at the top end of Cowbridge Road East.  First pub on the Canton pub crawl. 
 
Pub sign depicts Cavalier and Roundhead from the Civil War with river flowing with blood between the soldiers. 

Twice refurbished in the 1990s and now has two skittle alleys.
 

The Corporation Hotel, Cardiff

The Corporation dates back to the late 1890s and formerly known as the Canton Market Hotel which originally stood as a farmhouse.

A lively public house and popular with the younger generation.

Open plan establishment with a number of pool tables.

Serving real ales.

Reputedly haunted by a number of ghosts, one of which is a young Victorian girl.
