Hope and Anchor, Cardigan

The Hope and Anchor is located in the Pendre area of Cardigan and it’s unusual in this day and age that it’s next door to another public house called the Commercial which is closed at the time of writing.  A traditional public house divided into two sections with the lounge on the left side of the building and the bar on right hand side.

According to the census of 1851 the Hope and Anchor was run by James and Elizabeth Owens who had two children and had a servant called Margaret Howells.  Also on the premises was a sailor’s wife called Sarah Harries.

In 1902 the Hope and Anchor was demolished but was quickly rebuilt.  It was noted at the time 'Hope and Anchor Inn in Pendre, noted in byegone years of long ago as the seat of many an animated discussion on political, social and general subjects, is now a thing of the past, and upon its old foundations are rising phoenix like a new and up-to-date edifice. Whether its new associations will compare to its olden glories will scarcely ever be known’

In the lounge are various local photos including a number of rugby teams.  Pool table and darts board in bar with full trophy cabinet indicating successful sporting sides.  Two televisions on either side of room showing live sports.

The Hope and Anchor became a Brains establishment in the late 20^th century.
